UK Document Legalisation for Germany

German authorities accept the FCDO apostille on UK documents — but for most procedures, they also require a beglaubigte Übersetzung (certified German translation) by a translator publicly appointed by a German court. Continental Visa manages both, plus the document bundle for Anabin degree recognition.

Document Legalisation for Germany — What’s Required

Germany is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which means UK public documents with an FCDO apostille are accepted by German authorities without further embassy legalisation. The complication is language and recognition.

Almost every German procedure — university enrolment, employment, marriage registration, residency — requires a beglaubigte Übersetzung: a certified German translation produced by a translator publicly appointed and sworn by a German Landgericht (Land court). And for academic recognition, you’ll usually need to navigate the Anabin database, run by Germany’s Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen).

Our 3-Step Process for Germany

We manage the full chain — from your UK document through to a certified German translation ready for submission.

1

Solicitor / Notary Certification

Where required (most personal and commercial documents), a UK solicitor or Notary Public certifies the document before FCDO submission.

2

FCDO Apostille

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office issues the apostille — the single certificate that makes your document recognised in Germany under the Hague Convention.

3

Beglaubigte Übersetzung

A publicly appointed and sworn German translator (öffentlich bestellt und beeidigt) produces the certified German translation of the apostilled document.

Need it fast? Where the timeline is tight, our Next-Day Apostille Service can deliver the FCDO apostille within one working day. Certified translation typically adds a further 3–5 working days.

Beglaubigte Übersetzung — Certified German Translation

A beglaubigte Übersetzung is a certified translation produced by a translator öffentlich bestellt und beeidigt — publicly appointed and sworn — by a German Land court. The translator’s stamp and signature certify that the translation is accurate and complete. Only certified translations of this kind are accepted by German authorities for legal, academic and administrative use.

📝

What It Includes

A signed and officially stamped German translation, bound with a copy of the apostilled original, certified by the sworn translator’s personal seal.

When It’s Required

For Anerkennung (professional recognition), university enrolment, marriage and residency registration, court submissions and most German administrative procedures.

📚

What We Arrange

End-to-end: identifying the right court-sworn translator for your document type, supplying the apostilled original, and returning the bound certified translation to you.

Anabin & UK Degree Recognition in Germany

Anabin is Germany’s official database of foreign academic qualifications, maintained by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen, ZAB) of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). German employers, universities and authorities check Anabin to see how foreign qualifications are evaluated for use in Germany.

Anabin Status Ratings

UK universities are typically rated H+ (recognised university) in the Anabin Institutionen database, with specific degree programmes rated Äquivalent or Entsprechend in the Hochschulabschlüsse database. The combination of institution rating and degree-programme rating determines whether your UK degree is automatically recognised.

When Anabin Recognition Isn’t Automatic

If your degree programme isn’t listed in Anabin with a clear equivalence, or if your profession is regulated in Germany, you’ll usually need to apply for individual Zeugnisbewertung (statement of comparability) from the ZAB or, for regulated professions, full Anerkennung with the relevant Land authority.

What We Prepare

  • FCDO apostille on your degree certificate and academic transcript
  • Certified German translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) of both
  • Where useful, supporting documents from the awarding university confirming programme content, credit values and learning outcomes

We don’t submit the Zeugnisbewertung or Anerkennung application itself — that has to be done by you to the ZAB or relevant Land authority. But we make sure the UK-side document bundle is complete and meets German formatting and certification standards.

Germany Legalisation — FAQs

Common questions about preparing UK documents for use in Germany. For case-specific guidance, please contact us directly.

  • Does Germany accept the FCDO apostille on UK documents?

Yes. Germany is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so UK public documents legalised with the FCDO apostille are accepted by German authorities. For most procedures, the apostilled document also needs to be accompanied by a certified German translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) produced by a German publicly appointed and sworn translator.

  • What is a beglaubigte Übersetzung?

A beglaubigte Übersetzung is a certified translation produced by a translator publicly appointed and sworn by a German Land court (öffentlich bestellte und beeidigte Übersetzer). The translator’s stamp and signature certify that the translation is accurate and complete. Only certified translations of this kind are accepted by German authorities for legal, academic and administrative use.

  • What is Anabin and do I need to check it?

Anabin is the German database of recognised foreign academic qualifications, maintained by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen). It records how foreign qualifications are evaluated for use in Germany. Most German employers, universities and authorities check Anabin to see whether your UK degree is recognised at H+, H- or other levels. We help applicants understand their Anabin status and prepare the document bundle universities and employers ask for.

  • Do I need a German translation as well as the apostille?

For most German administrative procedures — university enrolment, work permits, professional recognition, marriage registration — yes. We arrange the certified German translation as part of the bundle so your documents arrive in Germany ready to submit.

  • Can you help with professional recognition (Anerkennung)?

We prepare the UK-side document bundle that the German recognition authority requires: apostilled degree certificate and transcripts, certified German translations, and supporting documentation. The recognition application itself (Anerkennung) is filed by you with the German Land authority responsible for your profession.

  • How long does the full process take?

Typical turnaround is 7–10 working days end-to-end: solicitor or notary certification (where required), FCDO apostille, and certified German translation. Next-Day FCDO apostille is available where the timeline is tight.
